Origin
Mojito mint (Mentha x villosa) originates from Cuba, where it is known as yerba buena or menta. It is distinct from common spearmint, offering a milder, citrus-infused flavor essential to authentic Cuban mojitos. This cultivar was relatively rare outside of Cuba until brought to North America around 2005-2006.
Key Characteristics
Flavor Profile: Milder and warmer than common spearmint, with distinct citrus and floral-fruity notes. It lacks the sharp, pungent menthol bite of peppermint.
Appearance: Features large, textured (quilted), and slightly hairy green leaves that are ideal for muddling. The plant typically grows 12 to 24 inches tall.
Growth Habit: Like most mints, it is a vigorous perennial that spreads rapidly via underground runners. It produces small white or light purple flower spikes in late summer.
Growing & Care Tips
Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. In hot climates, providing afternoon shade can prevent the leaves from burning and becoming bitter.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, but ensure the pot has good drainage to avoid root rot.
Containment: It is highly recommended to grow mojito mint in containers. If planted directly in the ground, it can quickly become invasive and overtake your garden.
Hardiness: It is hardy in USDA zones 5–9. In colder regions, it may die back to the roots in winter and return in spring.
