Cotton Candy Mint (Mentha hybrid) is a unique variety of mint prized for its unusually sweet, soft aroma that mimics the scent of carnival cotton candy. Bred by Jim Westerfield, it stands out from other mints with its distinct pink flowers and aqua-bluish, fluffy leaves.

Key Characteristics

  • Aroma & Flavor: It has a "soft, sweet aroma". While it smells like cotton candy, like most specialty mints, it still retains a base minty flavor.

  • Appearance: Reaches a height of 12–24 inches and a spread of about 18 inches. It features decorative pink flower spikes and aromatic grey-green to aqua-bluish foliage.

  • Hardiness: Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 4 to 11.

Care Requirements

To grow a healthy Cotton Candy Mint plant, follow these guidelines:

  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. In very hot climates, afternoon shade can prevent wilting and heat stress.

  • Water: Requires consistently moist but well-drained soil. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, typically every 2-3 days in summer.

  • Soil: Thrives in fertile, organic-rich soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.

  • Containment: Like most mints, it is an aggressive spreader. It is highly recommended to grow it in containers to prevent it from taking over your garden.
