Jessica's Sweet Pear Mint (Mentha hybrid) is a unique perennial herb celebrated for its distinct aroma and flavor that mimics sweet, ripe pears rather than typical menthol mint. It was bred by the late Jim Westerfield, a renowned mint breeder, and named after his cat, Jessie.
Key Characteristics
Flavor & Aroma: It has a light, fruity sweetness with a fragrance described as "pear cider". The scent is released strongly when the leaves are crushed.
Appearance: Features bright green, pointy leaves—sometimes appearing silvery in sunlight—and produces spikes of lavender, pink, or lilac flowers in mid-summer.
Growth Habit: Unlike many invasive mints, this variety is clump-forming and produces fewer runners, making it less likely to take over a garden bed. It grows approximately 18–24 inches tall.
Culinary Uses
This herb is versatile for both sweet and savory dishes:
Beverages: Ideal for brewing refreshing herbal teas, pear-flavored mojitos, smoothies, and fruit-infused water.
Desserts: Enhances fruit salads, sorbets, ice creams, and pastries.
Savory Dishes: Complements salads, sauces, and summer jellies.
Growing Tips
Sun & Soil: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers rich, moist, and well-drained soil.
Container Gardening: Because it is less invasive, it is a great candidate for window boxes or 10-inch pots.
Maintenance: Should be cut back after flowering or in late fall to prepare for winter. It is hardy in USDA zones 4–9.
